Deacon Nomination

Deacon nomination and election is an important responsibility in the life of a church. Nominations should be made after much prayer and in accordance with the guidelines as stated in the New Testament.

Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain. They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. And let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless.

Their wives likewise must be dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded, faithful in all things.

Let deacons each be the husband of one wife, managing their children and their own households well. For those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus. 1 Timothy 3:8-18

The current men are currently serving or are rotating off and are not eligible to be nominated this year.

Deacon Covenant

Below is the Covenant a Deacon must accept to allow their name to be listed on the ballot.

As a Prospective Deacon Nominee of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, I (1) understand the Scriptural qualifications for a deacon as listed in 1 Timothy 3:8-13, (2) understand the duties and responsibilities of an Active Deacon at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, (below), (3) have the willingness to agree to and sign the “Deacon Covenant” (below) that contains the “duties” of a deacon as listed in the Church Constitution and By-laws in Section 3. (Failure to sign this covenant will prevent the nominee’s name from being included on the ballot), and (4) have the willingness to serve as an Active Deacon if elected.

I make this solemn covenant, if elected, to uphold the Constitution and By-Laws as stated below:

DUTIES. The deacons are to be associated with the pastor in overseeing the spiritual and general interests of the church.
1. No deacon shall be ordained by this church who does not tithe and who cannot consistently support every area of the church life.
2. The deacons shall be zealous to guard the unity of Spirit within the church in the bonds of peace.
3. They shall serve as a council of advice and conference with the pastor in all matters pertaining to the welfare and work of the church.
4. They are to establish and maintain personal fraternal relations with all the members of the church. This does not delegate to the deacons the right of authority over members of this church but is to be advisory in nature only.
5. The deacons shall not meet without the knowledge of the pastor.
6. In counsel with the pastor, and by such methods as the Holy Spirit may direct in accordance with the New Testament teaching, they are able to have the responsibility of the discipline of the church. In administering such, they are to be guided always by the principles set forth in Matthew 18:15-17; 1 Corinthians 5:9-13; and 1 Thessalonians 5:12-14.
